Benfica complete signing of Joan Capdevila from Villarreal

Benfica complete signing of Joan Capdevila from Villarreal

The Spain defender has joined the Portuguese club on a two-year deal, ending his stint with the Yellow Submarine.

Benfica have announced the signing of Villarreal defender Joan Capdevila via a note on their official website.

The World Cup winner has signed a two-year deal with Jorge Jesus' men, with a €20 million release clause inserted into the contract.

Last Monday, it was revealed that Benfica had opened negotiations with the Primera Division side over Capdevila.

The Eagles have been in the market for a left-back since Fabio Coentrao joined Real Madrid earlier this month.

Capdevila has won 59 caps for Spain, scoring four goals since making his debut in 2002. He played every minute of his nation's triumphant World Cup campaign last year.

The full-back enjoyed spells with Atletico Madrid, Espanyol and Deportivo La Coruna before joining Villarreal in 2007.

Keepers stake claim

Competition for places will be a familiar theme at Old Trafford this season.

Few players are certain to start most games, and that includes new goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Spanish Under-21 stopper joined the Reds for the Seattle leg of the US tour, although he will only make his debut when United meet Chicago Fire on Saturday 23 July.

At CenturyLink Field on Wednesday evening, both Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos impressed; the Dane made two sharp saves in quick succession in the first period while Amos was called upon on three occasions after the break.

United may have splashed big money for de Gea this summer, but Sir Alex admits the door is still open for the club’s other goalkeepers to challenge the 20-year-old for the no.1 jersey.

“Obviously we’ve signed David de Gea and I’d imagine he’ll be the main choice,” the boss said at his post-match press conference. “But you have to say, the other two goalkeepers – Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos – have probably said to themselves that there’s an opportunity here with van der Sar retiring.

“So it’s an open door as far as I’m concerned. De Gea will play on Saturday in Chicago but they’ll all get their share of games [on tour]. Then the decision on whoever starts the season will depend on how de Gea settles.”

It’s not just between the posts where Sir Alex will have selection headaches. Out wide, the manager

SKYSPORTS.COM APOLOGY TO JOHN TERRY

CHELSEA - AN APOLOGY

At skysports.com we have a reputation for the honesty and integrity of our reporting. Unfortunately we fell short of those standards with our coverage of John Terry's interview with Sky Sports News on July 19 during which the Chelsea captain was asked to comment on Luka Modric.

We would like to clarify that John Terry did not refer to Luka Modric as being disrespectful to Tottenham Hotspur during the interview. On realising our error we immediately removed the original article and published a corrected version.

We would like to apologise to John Terry and Chelsea for any inconvenience caused.

Rooney: Reds getting sharper

Wayne Rooney says United's goal blitz against the Seattle Sounders proves the players are beginning to hit their stride.

The England striker netted a second half hat-trick after coming off the bench at the break, while Michael Owen, Mame Biram Diouf, Ji-sung Park and Gabriel Obertan also got in on the scoring act as United ran out 7-0 winners at CenturyLink Field.

Rooney told MUTV the Reds' comprehensive win over the Sounders was the reward for a period of intensive pre-season training in Seattle.

"I think the result shows how hard we've worked this week and we've benefitted from it tonight," he said. "We looked sharp and scored some really good goals.

"It's a great result for us but the most important thing was the work-out."

Sir Alex talked after the game about the competition for places in the goalkeeping and midfield department, but there's likely to be a fair old battle going on up front as well.

"We know there's a lot of competition for places with the strikers this season," added Rooney. "And we've got Chicharito to come back in as well.

"We all need to make sure we keep working hard and fight for the one or two places available."

Former Real Madrid striker Ivan Zamorano: Alexis Sanchez will adapt to Pep Guardiola & Barcelona

The retired forward thinks that his compatriot will thrive at Barca under Guardiola, and also offers his opinion on Brazilian striker Neymar.

Ex-Real Madrid striker Ivan Zamorano believes that Alexis Sanchez will be a huge success at Barcelona.

The Chilean winger is believed to be inching ever nearer to completing a transfer to the Catalan club, and yesterday it was revealed that Sanchez' agent was in Barcelona to thrash out a deal for the player.

Zamorano has dispelled any notions that the 22-year-old might not be up to La Liga standard, telling Marca: ''Alexis [Sanchez] has an advantage. Already, he has experience. He has triumphed in the world's toughest league, which is Italian, definitely.

''Sanchez is a guy who knows how to listen and he will adapt to [Pep] Guardiola."

The Santiago Bernabeu legend, who also enjoyed spells with Sevilla and Inter, went on to discuss Brazilian sensation Neymar, and revealed he was highly impressed by the 19-year-old's capabilities.

Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have been linked with a move for the emerging Santos star, and Zamorano added: "He [Neymar] has huge potential. He can be a decisive player.

"The only thing missing with Neymar is experience, but that will be earned over time.''

Chelsea striker Anelka dismisses Manchester United, Liverpool spending

Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has dismissed the big spending of Manchester United and Liverpool.

Anelka echoed the sentiments of team-mate Frank Lampard, who claimed no matter how much their Barclays Premier League title rivals spend, Chelsea still believe they will be the team to beat.

"I don't think we need to strengthen the squad if we are going to win the Champions League," he said.

"We have a good squad already. We are strong everywhere and I do not detect any real weaknesses."

He added: "Our biggest challenge will be the same as it has always been - Manchester United. They won the title and have bought some good players so they will be our biggest challengers, but we will be ready for them I can assure you."

Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho praises display of Cristiano Ronaldo in Chivas friendly win

Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho praises display of Cristiano Ronaldo in Chivas friendly win

The Portuguese coach was full of praise for his compatriot after a treble in the 3-0 victory, which he felt constituted a testing run-out for his players in pre-season.

Ronaldo scored all three goals in Real Madrid's second match of their summer tour of the United States, which all came in the final quarter of the game after a scoreless opening 45 minutes in the World Football Challenge.

"Cristiano is Cristiano. He always has the joy, the motivation and the pride to play, be it in China, Japan or the USA. He himself is pleased to have played well and scored. We knew we wanted to play well and we managed that," he told Goal.com after the match.

Mourinho also had warm words of encouragement for another of the club's superstars in Brazilian playmaker Kaka, whom he feels is ready to bounce back and hit top form after a disappointing, injury-afflicted period at the Bernabeu to date.

"I always knew that what Kaka needed was to have a proper pre-season. The World Cup, injuries, a last-minute transfer to Real Madrid have combined to ensure that he has not had a proper pre-season in five or six seasons."

Pre-season tours of north America have become commonplace in recent years and Mourinho feels that the standard of the opposition means that such games are a good basis for preparation ahead of a long league campaign.

"This was very good training for us. I have been coming to the USA for many years with Chelsea and now Madrid. We played against American and Mexican teams, though never Chivas from America. They are tough games against good sides, who play aggressively.

"That is what we need. There is no need to win games 10-0. We need to play against good teams, who give us some problems."

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson delighted with support in win over Seattle Sounders

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson delighted with support in win over Seattle Sounders

The Red Devils manager was pleased with the atmosphere created in their latest match in the USA, while Ryan Giggs also praises the fans’ support on their pre-season tour.

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised the support Manchester United have received on their pre-season tour of America.

The Red Devils won the latest match of the tour on Wednesday, with Wayne Rooney netting a hat-trick in a 7-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders.

Sir Alex said: “We think that the United States is an emerging country in terms of soccer and there’s also potential for us to increase our support base, which we’re always conscious of.

“We had good support tonight. It’s pleasing to us when we try to spread the gospel about the way we play, the romance of the club, the history of the club. The United States is a growing market in terms of support.”

He added: “The pleasing thing for me was the number of fans all mixed together.

“That was like the old days of England and Scotland, when fans could mix together and [have] no trouble. I don't know if we could ever get back to that, but it was a pleasure to watch that tonight.”

Midfielder Ryan Giggs echoed his manager’s thoughts, and added that the club’s success is down to a mixture of their history and attacking play.

The Welshman said: “I think the history, the way that we play football, the success, the fans that we have around the world – it's a mixture really, of a lot of things, but obviously the history is a big part of it.

“We've always played with wingers, we've always played to excite. I think if we won things and we weren't playing the right way the fans wouldn't stand for it.

“What comes over is the fanatical fans, really. We got told that the Seattle fans are the best in MLS, and I think we witnessed that tonight.”

Anders Lindegaard also praised the club’s fanbase, adding: “The way the club has managed to market itself is extraordinary.

“It's the biggest sports brand in the world and that's because there's some people in the background who know how to run a football club.”

Gervinho declares: Arsenal BIGGER than Cesc, Nasri

Gervinho insists he will have no regrets over his move to Arsenal should they sell Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in the coming weeks.

While there are set to be plenty more developments over the closing six weeks of the summer transfer window, Gervinho, who has now completed his £11m move from Lille, insists whatever happens life at Arsenal will go on.

"It is football, everything moves quickly," Gervinho told Radio Monte Carlo Sport.

"If the club does not manage to keep these players, they will be able to replace them."

Gervinho added: "Arsenal will always remain a large club. No-one knows what will happen in the future, maybe in a year or two Arsenal will win titles."

Agent of Udinese's Alexis Sanchez in Barcelona to complete deal with La Liga champions

Agent of Udinese's Alexis Sanchez in Barcelona to complete deal with La Liga champions

The Chilean international appears set to finally confirm the deal as his agent has travelled to Spain to finalise a transfer to the La Liga and Champions League holders.

Alexis Sanchez's agent, Fernando Felicevich, has flown to Barcelona to resume talks between Udinese and the La Liga champions and put the finishing touches on the player's move to the Catalan club.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gino Pozzo, the son of Udinese owner, Giampaolo Pozzo, revealed that the agreement between the two clubs 'was total'.

Felicevich has travelled to the Catalonia capital to continue negotiations for his client, and it is believed a deal could be closed in the near future.

"I cannot say anything, but there is not much left [to do]," he told Ona FM upon landing in Barcelona.

The Chile international has been linked with a move to Barcelona all summer long, with Manchester City also mooted as a possibility earlier in the transfer window.

However, Sanchez clearly expressed his preference to move to the Camp Nou, and the Champions League holders will now reportedly pay a €27 million transfer fee, with an extra €16m based on other variables.

Owners of AC Milan insist club is not for sale at any price

Owners of AC Milan insist club is not for sale at any price

Hours after Italian news outlets reported that the San Siro outfit's hierarchy were considering the possible sale of shares, Fininvest have responded in defiant manner.

The holding company of AC Milan, Fininvest, have denied that they are considering the possibility of relinquishing shares in the football club in order to raise funds.

Earlier on Wednesday, reports emerged that the Serie A giants could potentially be hit with a heavy financial restraint after owner Silvio Berlusconi was given a nine-digit fine after losing a long-winded court battle in the Lodo Mondadori saga.

However, the idea of selling part of the club to an Arabic consortium, or floating it on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange has been ruled out, in a statement released to ANSA.

"We can categorically confirm that these fanciful hypotheses and scenarios [of selling the club] are totally unfounded," Fininvest told the news agency.

Milan were crowned Serie A champions last season, for the first time in seven years.

Ghana’s Laryea Kingston: If I play at the World Cup for just five seconds my heart will be at peace

Ghana’s Laryea Kingston: If I play at the World Cup for just five seconds my heart will be at peace

The midfielder remains optimistic that he can make it to the next World Cup before he retires, having failed to form part of the Ghana squad in two previous global showpieces

The new Israeli top flight side Hapoel Be’er Sheva signing said attracting the technical handlers of the Black Stars at the moment at club level remains his top priority.

“It’s something that I’m not going to give up on,” the 30-year-old stated. “I will work really hard in my new club and try to impress the technical heads of the national team. I will give 100% on the pitch; at least if I play at the World Cup for just five seconds, my heart will be at peace and I can hang my boots a happy man.”

The former Vitesse Arnhem player missed Ghana’s maiden World Cup appearance in 2006 after picking up a red card that same year at the African Cup of Nations. He also failed to make it to South Africa last year following his exclusion from then coach Milovan Rajevac’s final squad for the 2010 World Cup.

“Missing the tournament came as a big blow to me, in fact I can never forget that bitter experience,” he added.

Despite that low point in his international career, the player, who has been without a club for close to six months until recently, remains optimistic he will rise in the pecking order to regain his spot with the Black Stars.

“I will like to play for the Black Stars again, why not? I’m still a Ghanaian; I’m still active and have a lot to offer,” stated the former Heart of Midlothian midfielder. “Like every footballer I also like to play for my country and if they give me the chance again, I will not hesitate to honour it.”

Udinese's Gino Pozzo: Agreement with Barcelona for Alexis Sanchez has been completed

Udinese's Gino Pozzo: Agreement with Barcelona for Alexis Sanchez has been completed

The Serie A outfit have finalised a deal with the European champions for the Chile international, with an official announcement to be made in the coming days

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Udinese over the signing of Alexis Sanchez, according to Gino Pozzo, the son of Udinese club owner Giampaolo Pozzo.

Speaking with Spanish radio station RAC1 upon his arrival on Wednesday at Barcelona's El Prat airport, Pozzo stated that "the agreement with Barcelona for Alexis Sanchez is complete."

The Chilean, who has finished international duty with his country in the 2011 Copa America, is expected to join Barca's pre-season training camp once the deal is officially rubber-stamped.

The 22-year-old forward has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona from Italian club Udinese in recent months, with the deal reportedly costing the Spanish giants €27 million plus variables.

His success for both club and country has also drawn the attention of other major clubs across Europe in past seasons such as Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Sanchez played an important role in Udinese's campaign last season, scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances for the club in the league.

Xavi 'acting in Cesc's interest'

Xavi 'acting in Cesc's interest'

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has defended his recent remarks about Cesc Fabregas, insisting he was only acting in the interest of the Arsenal captain.

Xavi recently claimed on Barca's official website that Spain international Fabregas is "suffering" at Emirates Stadium as he seeks a return to his homeland this summer.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who is determined to retain Fabregas' services, reacted angrily to the comments, branding them "very disrespectful".

However, Xavi has now retorted. He said: "It seems absurd to me. I was only acting in the interest of Cesc and of Barca.

"But that's that and I really don't want to get into a war of words with Wenger. I didn't want to offend anyone."

Barca boss Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday that Arsenal are willing to negotiate the sale of Fabregas, although it remains to be seen if the two clubs will reach an agreement over a fee.

But Xavi believes a sale is more likely this summer, after the Gunners refused to even consider parting company with Fabregas last year.

He said: "I don't really know the situation but it seems they are more disposed to sell this year than last year.

"Maybe we can be a bit more optimistic but it depends on reaching an agreement with Arsenal."

Kean: No bids for Samba

Blackburn manager Steve Kean has said that the club have no received any offers for star defender Chris Samba and are hoping to keep hold of him for the new season.

Samba, 27, has been linked with a £12 million move to Arsenal after a series of impressive performances for Rovers last season and the Congo international is also attracting the attention of other clubs around Europe.

However, with the club's financial security now safe, Kean claims that they are hopeful of keeping their best players.

"We've had no bids for Chris, and no bids for any other player at this time," Kean said, "and we would like to keep it like this as Chris is only a couple of months into a five-year contract.

"So if the bids don't come in, we can keep Chris as a part of a defensive unit that proved very solid at the end of last season."

Samba handed in a transfer request after the sacking of Sam Allardyce, although pledged his future to the club by signing a new deal soon after, although has admitted that he would relish a move to play in the Champions League.

Odemwingie targets own recordJuly 20, 2011

Odemwingie targets own recordJuly 20, 2011

West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie says that he will better last season's total of 15 Premier League goals this year.

Peter Odemwingie was key to West Brom's success last season

Odemwingie, a Nigeria international, impressed in his single season at the Hawthorns and was linked with a move to Arsenal, among others. However, now that he has opted to remain at the club, he has set himself a target of beating his previous feat.

He told the Express & Star: "I am always in competition with myself and beating my own records show me that I am going forward, growing and improving.

"So I will set myself a target of beating my own record again. It is going to depend on how much I want it and how much I go for it, but football is also a team game.

"If the whole team plays well I will get chances and get goals, so my prayer will be that the whole team functions properly and everybody plays well.

"If that happens, then as a striker I need to get goals for the team and myself. Hopefully the whole team as a unit can do well."

Manchester City do not need Carlos Tevez - Mario Balotelli

Manchester City do not need Carlos Tevez - Mario Balotelli

The Italy international claims Roberto Mancini's side can cope without their captain and top scorer if he leaves the club this summer, and is looking to improve this season

Find the best odds and bet on the Premier League. Mario Balotelli insists Manchester City have a good enough squad to succeed this season, even if Carlos Tevez does leave the club this summer.

The Argentine striker had looked set to move back to South America with Corinthians, but his former club have pulled out because there is not enough time to complete the deal before the close of the Brazilian transfer window.

Balotelli told reporters: "It does not matter if Carlos is here or not.

"If Carlos is here it's good, while if he goes away I'm sure someone else will arrive.

"But how I play is all down to me.

"It doesn't matter who else is at Manchester City.

"Carlos is a great player, so I hope he's going to stay. But I've seen great players leave clubs before.

"It happened at Inter. This is football.

"We have a good team here.

"If a player wants to leave it's his decision but we'll still be a good team."

The Italian striker admits that he could have done better during his first season in England, and believes he will prove his worth this season.

"I thought my first season was so-so," he added.

"I know I can score a lot more. I will show City fans this season what I can do."

Downing will prove great Liverpool signing

Houllier: Downing will prove great Liverpool signing

Gerard Houllier feels Liverpool have pulled off a coup with the signing of Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing.

Houllier worked with the England man during his short stint in charge of Aston Villa and is confident the winger can go on to be a big success on Merseyside.

"Stewart will fit in very well at Liverpool," Houllier told liverpoolfc.tv.

"I like him very much as a player and I am certain he will be a very big asset to them.

"Stewart is a very modern player. He can attack and defend and was involved in so many goals for Villa last season.

"He is one of the best crossers of a ball in the Premier League with (either his) right or left foot and is very skilful."

Charles N'Zogbia is an important player for Wigan

Sunderland defender Titus Bramble is still hoping former Newcastle team-mate Charles N'Zogbia could join him on Wearside.

Charles N'Zogbia is an important player for Wigan

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce has publicly ruled out a move for the Wigan midfielder because the deal became ''too rich'' for the club, but he would dearly like to land a player he has tracked for some time.

N'Zogbia's proposed move to Aston Villa stalled this week when the Latics rejected their offer for the Frenchman, and it remains to be seen whether or not any of the clubs chasing his signature will meet both Wigan's asking price and the winger's wage demands.

However, Bramble is confident the former Le Havre man would welcome a switch to the Stadium of Light.

He told the Journal: ''I have spoken to Charles a few times this summer. When I spoke to him last year, he said it would be a fantastic move for him. Whether it materialises for him or not, I don't know - but you never know in football.

''I think the players would love him here, the fans would love him to be here - but it's out of our hands. We want as many fantastic players as we can here. He's a fantastic player and he would be great for this club.''

Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery: I can be as good as Barcelona's Lionel Messi

The France international had an injury plagued 2010-11, but is looking forward to the forthcoming season, where he wants to prove himself as one of the best players in the world

Find the best odds and bet on La Liga. Franck Ribery has stated that if he has an injury free 2011-12 with Bayern Munich, he can prove that he is as good as Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

The diminutive Argentine led the Catalan club to La Liga and Champions League glory last term, whilst the France international had an injury plagued and largely frustrating season in Bavaria.

Despite this, the former Marseille attacker believes he has the ability to rival the South American superstar.

"If I can get fully fit again and am free in my own head, while having a good relationship with the coach, if this base is right then I can reach the level of Messi. This is for me without question," the 28-year-old told Bild.

Ribery was full of praise for the Spanish champions' main man however, and has applauded the attacker's ability to perform consistently over a long period of time.

''In my first two years [at Bayern], the level I played at was really incredible. Messi has shown, however, that he can do it for three, four years in a row.

'I have worked with his team-mates; [Eric] Abidal has told me a lot about Messi's game. He told me that Messi's mentality is outstanding, he is always relaxed," he continued.

When asked about his new club coach Jupp Heynckes, the winger compared him to a managerial great.

"With Jupp Heynckes, I often think of [Ottmar] Hitzfeld. He has the same strengths, talks a lot with the players and allows them their freedom on the pitch. Exactly what I need. I feel free again, to show what is inside me,'' the Frenchman concluded.

Bayern start their Bundesliga campaign on August 8, with a fixture at the Allianz Arena against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Aston Villa signing Given defends ex-Manchester City pal Tevez

Aston Villa signing Given defends ex-Manchester City pal Tevez

diggsdiggNew Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given has defended former Manchester City teammate Carlos Tevez.

Given, who was speaking at Aston Villa's new kit launch with Casino firm Gentings, said he thought the former Manchester United striker would seal his move to Corinthians in the near future.

He said: "I think it looks like he'll probably leave, but there's lots of negotiating to go I think.

"I don't think it's mercenary. You've got to respect his decision. He's got two young kids in Argentina and he sees them once every two months so it's very difficult for him."

Given added that people often see footballers as commodities, rather than people.

He said: "He is one of the best players in the world and people forget there's a human being behind that and he does have human feelings as well.

"I wish him well, he's been a great player for Man City and he'll be missed."

Peru 0-2 Uruguay: Luis Suarez double books Copa America final for Oscar Tabarez's side

Peru 0-2 Uruguay: Luis Suarez double books Copa America final for Oscar Tabarez's side

Two second-half goals from the Liverpool man were enough to sink the Peruvian resistance, and send Uruguay into the Copa final for the first time since 1999

A Luis Suarez quickfire double broke Peruvian hearts in La Plata, and ensured that Uruguay are the first team to book their place in the 2011 Copa America final with a 2-0 victory over the battling Inca outfit.

Suarez hit twice in five minutes to all but settle the game in the opening stages of the second half, taking him level top-scorer for the tournament with Sergio Aguero, on three goals.

Peru's task to turn their fortunes around was made even harder when captain Juan Manuel Vargas was expelled for a vicious elbow, but Sergio Markarian's team will go out with their heads held high after a gutsy display.

The game started at a great pace, with neither side willing to give an inch in front of their vociferous supporters. The result was an impressive quantity of fouls, and Victor Yotun found his way into the referee's notebook after just one minute.

Suarez found himself with an excellent chance after a free kick, but the Liverpool man shot high and wide. Raul Fernandez then turned himself into the Inca hero with 15 minutes gone, twice denying Alvaro Pereira at his feet when a goal looked certain.

Peru were by no means second-best, however, and halfway through the first period they had a glorious chance. Vargas' cross flashed invitingly out of the reach of Fernando Muslera, but neither Paolo Guerrero nor Luis Advincula could get a touch with two despairing lunges and the ball ran harmlessly out of play.

Uruguay finished the half with a spell of decent pressure, but despite threatening a handful of times - principally from the right boot of Diego Forlan at dead-ball situations - they could not break down a determined Peru team.

Captain Diego Lugano thought that he had opened the scoring late in the first half, but play was called back for a foul on goalkeeper Fernandez to ensure the sides went down the tunnel with nothing to separate them.

Super Suarez
Two-goal hero fires Uruguay into Copa America final

The breakthrough came just after the interval, and it was to the joy of the Celeste section of the crowd. Forlan tried a speculative effort from outside the box, and when Fernandez spilled the ball it was Suarez who pounced first and chipped into the open net.

The striker was mobbed by team-mates on the side of the pitch, while the Uruguayan fans burst into song as a place in the final moved closer to becoming a reality.

The Liverpool man was on a roll, and slotted a second just minutes later to make it 2-0. Alvaro Pereira played Suarez in with a delightful pass, and he made no mistake in rounding the keeper and rolling the ball in to send the Uruguay faithful into ecstasy.

Already on the ropes, Peru's chances took a further blow when Vargas was shown a red card for landing an elbow on Sebastian Coates. Peru kept trying, but could not find the means to break through the Uruguay back-line, leaving Diego Forlan and company to claim victory by a two-goal margin.

The win puts Oscar Tabarez's team into the final for the first time since 1999. They will play the winner of Paraguay-Venezuela this Sunday in the Monumental.

Tevez transfer deal collapses

The deal between Manchester City and Corinthians for striker Carlos Tevez appears to have collapsed, with the Brazilian club revealing they are unable to make the first payment immediately.

Corinthians now say they are in no position to make an up-front payment, and with the transfer window in Brazil closing on Wednesday, the club have made a statement on their official website suggesting the Argentine will have to remain with City until at least next January.

"The board of Sporting Club Corinthians hereby officially announce the impossibility of hiring the Argentine striker Carlos Tevez," the statement said.

"While acknowledging the efforts of Manchester City and all involved in the negotiation, more time is needed for the transfer to be achieved, given that the window to sign players from abroad closes on Wednesday, July 20.

"There is no more sufficient time for the transfer to go through. We are aware our fans wanted Tevez to join our club again and we hope we can have the player with us in the future."

It is understood City requested Corinthians make their first payment before the transfer is completed, instead of early in 2012 as stated in the Sao Paulo club's original offer, forcing negotiations to stall.

Corinthians' director of football, Duilio Monteiro Alves, earlier confirmed the negotiations were not going well, saying: "I'm pessimistic. City want us to start the payments now, and we cannot do that."

Adrian Ruocco, Tevez's attorney added: "Regrettably, judging from the pace of negotiations right now, it is improbable that we will come to any agreement with Corinthians," he told Lancenet.

"The only thing that stands in the way of a deal is this matter about the first installment. But we will wait until Wednesday, that is the only thing we can do."

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp confirms interest in signing Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor on loan

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp confirms interest in signing Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor on loan

The manager is looking at the possibility of taking the former Arsenal striker to White Hart Lane in order to temporarily strengthen his attacking options for this season

Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko all failed to cement their place in the starting line-up last season for Spurs, and Redknapp has made known his intention to sign another striker this summer.

The Tottenham boss told reporters: “I think the chairman has been speaking, there’s been some talk. I'm not sure it’s a name that has been mentioned.

“I spoke to the chairman about the possibility of loaning him [Adebayor], but I'm not sure if they would, but if we could loan him he'd be of interest.

“He’s a quality player, we'll wait and see.”

Tottenham drew 1-1 with the Orlando Pirates in the latest match of their pre-season tour of South Africa, and Redknapp has praised Spurs' opponents for their display.

He said: “It was a good game, the Pirates played ever so well, in the second half especially they moved the ball and kept the ball great. They waited around our box and they gave us a real good test.

“They were very, very good, the second half after they got the equaliser they looked more likely to win than we did.

“The opposition tonight were very good; they won the treble last year and my coaching staff felt the Pirates tonight were very good.”

Pirates coach Julio Leal was disappointed with his team as he thought that they showboated during the match, which he felt showed disrespect towards Tottenham.

But Redknapp said: “They're confident with the ball and I have no problem with that at all, if the coach isn't happy with them it's different, but for me it didn't matter.

“They kept the ball. Okay, they showboated a bit, but it’s no big problem, they played very well today, they should be very proud of how they played against a Premier League side. I thought they were excellent.”

Barcelona boss Guardiola warns Cesc: Do not rebel against Arsenal

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has urged Cesc Fabregas to stay calm over his plans to quit Arsenal.

The Sun says Barca are set to make a second offer this week but Arsenal, who are holding out for £40m, do not want the saga to drag on beyond this month.

Fabregas, 24, remains desperate to rejoin his old club and yesterday had only a light training session with ex-Arsenal star Sol Campbell - who is being allowed to keep fit at London Colney.

But Guardiola has urged Fabregas to leave on good terms, adding: "Cesc has to do what Arsenal ask. I wouldn't like one of my players to refuse to train because they want to go."

Neymar's move to Real Madrid only depends on payment now - agent

The Brazil international appears to be on the verge of signing for the Copa del Rey champions, though he may decide to join the Spanish club at the end of the year

The Brazilian sensation has been strongly linked with a move to Europe after enjoying an impressive season with Santos, helping them claim the Copa Libertadores.

Real Madrid have been suggested as the likeliest destination for the 19-year-old forward, who has a release clause of €45 million, and the player's agent has now revealed that a deal is close at hand.

"There is nothing else to talk about. The only thing left is that Real Madrid pay up," Ribeiro was quoted as saying by Marca.

"If they do it, Santos have nothing to do, other than receive their share of the transfer."

Earlier on Tuesday, Neymar admitted he wanted to stay at Santos, but Ribeiro has now opened the door to a transfer at the end of the year, after the Club World Cup has taken place.

"Neymar also has to say when he wants to go, because it is true that he would like to be at the

Corinthians have announced the end to negotiations for the transfer of Manchester City's Carlos Tevez, according to the club's official website.

Despite City manager Roberto Mancini claiming that a deal reportedly worth around €40 million had been made on Monday, a formal statement from Corinthians has now confirmed that the transfer has fallen through.

Corinthians director of football Edu Gasper previously said that a deal was likely to be completed on Monday, however with the Brazilian transfer window closing on July 20, a finalised agreement has been deemed impossible.

"The director of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista comes forward officially to communicate the impossibility of the signing of Argentinian forward Carlos Tevez," the statement read.

"While recognising Manchester City's efforts and those of everyone involved, there's no more time for the signing to be finalised, considering that the window to sign players from abroad ends on Wednesday, July 20."

A major issue with negotiations is said to have been the structure of the €40m deal, with Corinthians opting for installments which were not accepted by Manchester City.

The Eastlands outfit, meanwhile, will look to continue to strenghten their current squad, with manager Mancini revealing he expects an official bid for Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero to be made within the next few days.
