Ghana’s Laryea Kingston: If I play at the World Cup for just five seconds my heart will be at peace

The midfielder remains optimistic that he can make it to the next World Cup before he retires, having failed to form part of the Ghana squad in two previous global showpieces

The new Israeli top flight side Hapoel Be’er Sheva signing said attracting the technical handlers of the Black Stars at the moment at club level remains his top priority.

“It’s something that I’m not going to give up on,” the 30-year-old stated. “I will work really hard in my new club and try to impress the technical heads of the national team. I will give 100% on the pitch; at least if I play at the World Cup for just five seconds, my heart will be at peace and I can hang my boots a happy man.”

The former Vitesse Arnhem player missed Ghana’s maiden World Cup appearance in 2006 after picking up a red card that same year at the African Cup of Nations. He also failed to make it to South Africa last year following his exclusion from then coach Milovan Rajevac’s final squad for the 2010 World Cup.

“Missing the tournament came as a big blow to me, in fact I can never forget that bitter experience,” he added.

Despite that low point in his international career, the player, who has been without a club for close to six months until recently, remains optimistic he will rise in the pecking order to regain his spot with the Black Stars.

“I will like to play for the Black Stars again, why not? I’m still a Ghanaian; I’m still active and have a lot to offer,” stated the former Heart of Midlothian midfielder. “Like every footballer I also like to play for my country and if they give me the chance again, I will not hesitate to honour it.”
